How old do students have to be to undertake work experience?
Students can undertake a work experience placement from Year 10 onwards.
How long is a work experience placement?
Usually one or two weeks, can be longer and can be 1 day a week over a set period of time. Placements can also be extended for up to 3 days per week over the academic year. Please contact us to discuss your students requirements.
Why is a work placement assessment required for work placements?
Our assessments offer schools peace of mind that they have done everything they can to meet their duty of care, and for employers they offer a support network, knowing we are on hand for advice and guidance when hosting a young person on work placement.

Is Employers Liability Insurance required for work placements?
In most cases, yes. There are a few exemptions under the compulsory exemption ruling but we will advise as and when issues around this occur.
What sectors or types of jobs can students undertake a placement in?
We will do our utmost to facilitate placements in most sectors. The only exceptions to this are any placements involving entry to water, working at heights, nuclear stations (not based in offices or safe areas) and offshore gas rigs. We can usually put an assessment in for all other placements.
What are the hours of work when on work experience?
Hours vary per job role. The hours are usually stated on the job description we produce or are to be arranged and agreed at interview. Students can’t work more than an 8 hour working day and we do expect most students to follow a normal working pattern for their chosen industry – whether this be shift patterns or later working (up to 10pm) or a regular 9am to 5pm. Lunch time and breaks will be given.
Will the student get paid?
In short no, but some employers and businesses do sometimes offer a discretionary gift or token payment to say thank you.
Will the student need special clothes?
Any clothing requirements will be stated on the job description. This should also be discussed at interview.
Is there any contribution to cost for travel expenses?
Not usually. School will continue to make travel arrangements for those students who have special plans in place (and will speak direct to you if this affects you) – but for the majority you are expected to make your own way to placement either on foot, public transport or arrange a lift.
